Why convert AVIF to WEBP?
People convert AVIF to WEBP because AVIF makes remarkably small files, but older browsers, phones and photo editors still throw an error when they meet one, while WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than the same picture as JPG or PNG.
How to convert AVIF to WEBP
- Choose your AVIF file. Drop it on the box above, or tap to browse. You can pick several files at once.
- Confirm the target is .webp. It is preselected when your browser can encode it; otherwise the closest available target is chosen. Adjust quality, size or the other options if you want to.
- Convert and download. Press Convert, then Download. Your file stays on your device the whole time.
What is a .avif file?
AVIF uses the AV1 video codec to compress still images, often landing at half the size of an equivalent JPG. Browsers display it well; most desktop software does not yet. Use it for pages you build, and convert it to JPG or PNG for anything you need to send to another person.
What is a .webp file?
WebP is Google's web image format: roughly 30% smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, with support for transparency and animation. Every current browser displays it, but a great many desktop applications still cannot open one, which is why converting WebP to PNG or JPG is such a common need.
What to expect from this conversion
The image is decoded and re-encoded, so keep the quality slider at 85% or above — at that setting the difference is invisible to the eye. Transparency is flattened onto white for formats that cannot store it, such as JPG.
Is it private?
Yes, by design. Every conversion happens inside your own browser using your device’s processor — there is no server that receives your AVIF file, so there is nothing for anyone to store, scan or leak. You can confirm it yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab while you convert, and you will see no upload.
Questions about AVIF to WEBP
- Is this AVIF to WEBP converter free?
- Yes, completely. There is no account, no daily limit, no watermark and no premium tier.
- Is my AVIF file uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion runs inside your own browser using your device's processor. The file is read from your disk, converted in memory and saved back to your disk — nothing is transmitted, so there is nothing for anyone to store.
- Can I convert AVIF to WEBP online without downloading software?
- Yes. This is an online AVIF to WEBP converter that runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install and no app to trust with your files. It works the same on a phone.
- What happens to the quality?
- The image is decoded and re-encoded, so keep the quality slider at 85% or above — at that setting the difference is invisible to the eye. Transparency is flattened onto white for formats that cannot store it, such as JPG.
- Can I batch convert several AVIF files to WEBP at once?
- Yes. Select as many files as you like and they are converted one after another in a single tap, with a download for each and a zip of all of them.
- Should I keep the original AVIF file?
- Yes — keep it, converting never touches it. The reason to make a copy in another format is that AVIF makes remarkably small files, but older browsers, phones and photo editors still throw an error when they meet one.
